When to come

In short

Banda is a small group in Maluku that was, for about two centuries, the only source of nutmeg on earth — and the trip is shaped by that history and by a single hard fact: there is no direct way in.

  • Everything routes through Ambon, and nothing on that route runs daily.
  • The forts, the groves, the volcano and the walls are the four reasons to come.
  • Three days covers the town; seven covers the archipelago.

The whole trip

Six things that decide a Banda week

The history

Fort Nassau (1609) and Fort Belgica (1611), the VOC monopoly, and the conquest of 1621. Understood rather than romanticised.

Getting there

Ambon first. Then Pelni (8–10 h), a seasonal fast boat (5–6 h) or the small aircraft (45–60 min).

The season

Oct–Apr for calm seas and visibility. Jun–Aug is the southeast monsoon and crossings cancel.

The water

Walls into the Banda Trench, a lava flow regrowing coral, and hammerheads on the outer sites in season.

The volcano

Gunung Api, 640 m, last major eruption 1988. Two to three hours up, before dawn, with a guide.

The practicalities

Patchy signal, limited card acceptance, small room counts. Draw cash in Ambon and book beds once the crossing is confirmed.

Each of these has its own guide. This page is the map; the detail is one click away in the related section below.

The short answers

All practical info & FAQ

How long do I need?

Three days for the town and the forts, five for a proper day under water, seven to reach Run and Hatta with a spare day in hand.

How hard is it to get there?

Harder than anywhere else in this part of Indonesia. Ambon is a 3.5-hour flight from Jakarta, then a crossing that runs on a weekly or seasonal schedule rather than a daily one.

What is it actually like?

A small colonial town under an active volcano, with reefs that survived the twentieth century because almost nobody came. No chain hotels, no mass tourism.

What does it cost?

A three-day trip runs roughly USD 200–700 per person depending on where you sleep and whether you dive, before the Ambon flight.
