The archipelago is small — around ten islands ringing a single active volcano — but each one carries a distinct reason to go ashore. Access times are from the Banda Neira jetty.

Getting there

Getting to Banda, the honest legs

There is no direct way in. The gateway is Ambon — Pattimura Airport (AMQ) — reached from Jakarta, Makassar or Surabaya. From there, three passages cross to Banda, and every one has a weather caveat.

When is the best time to visit Banda Neira?

Broadly Oct–Apr brings the calmest Banda Sea, the best visibility and the hammerhead schooling. Jun–Aug is the southeast-monsoon window, when access is genuinely unreliable. Check the register above for your exact month.

How do I actually get to Banda Neira?

Fly to Ambon (AMQ) via Jakarta, Makassar or Surabaya, then cross by Pelni ferry (8–10 h, multi-week rotation), seasonal fast boat, or charter flight (45–60 min). Every crossing is weather-dependent.

Is Gunung Api safe to climb, given it is active?

Gunung Api is an active 640 m volcano whose last major eruption was 1988. The pre-dawn trek runs with local guides when conditions allow, and we follow the current local advisories rather than a fixed schedule.

How reliable is the Ambon–Banda ferry?

Honestly, only partly. The Pelni ferry runs a multi-week rotation and is cancellable in bad weather. We always build buffer days and hold a flight or fast-boat fallback, so a missed sailing does not end the trip.
