Are you diving?
One dive day fits in three. Two or more, and you want five — the boat day and the volcano morning do not sit well on the same schedule.
Itineraries · how many days you actually need
Three covers the town and the forts. Five adds a proper day under water. Seven reaches Run and Hatta, tide permitting. Here is what each shape gets you, and what it leaves out.
Three to five days is enough for Banda Neira itself — the town, the forts, a plantation and one day on the water — and the seventh day is what buys you the outer islands, Run and Hatta, which are the ones the sea can take away.
Side by side
The same stops in a different order. What changes is how much of the archipelago you reach and how much slack you have when the sea is wrong.
| Shape | Reaches | Under water | Leaves out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D2N | Banda Neira town, Fort Belgica, Gunung Api | One snorkel or dive trip | Banda Besar, the outer islands, any buffer day |
| 4D3N | Adds Banda Besar and a nutmeg estate | A full boat day | Run and Hatta |
| 5D4N | Adds Pulau Ai and the museum | Two days on the water | Run, usually |
| 7D6N | The whole group including Run and Hatta | Three or more days | Nothing, sea permitting |
Every shape assumes the Ambon crossing works on the day you planned it. In the Jun–Aug monsoon that is not a safe assumption, which is the real argument for the longer trip.
Picking a length
One dive day fits in three. Two or more, and you want five — the boat day and the volcano morning do not sit well on the same schedule.
The forts, the museum and the colonial quarter are all walkable from town. Three days is genuinely enough for that.
Sixty to ninety minutes of open boat each way, calm days only. Budget a whole day, and a spare one.
If you have a fixed flight out of Ambon, add a day. A missed crossing costs more than the extra night.
Most first-time visitors land on four or five days. Divers and photographers almost always wish they had taken seven.
Three to five for the islands themselves. Three covers Fort Belgica, the town and one trip on the water; five lets you add Pulau Ai, a nutmeg estate and a second day snorkelling or diving without compressing anything.
Fort Belgica and the colonial quarter on arrival, a snorkel or dive trip on the second day, and Gunung Api before dawn on the third. It is a full schedule with no slack in it.
For a well-rounded trip, yes. Four gets you Banda Neira, a nutmeg estate on Banda Besar, and a boat day out to Ai — which is the version most first-time visitors are happy with.
Arrive and walk the town and Fort Belgica; snorkel at Ai; dive at Hatta; the museum and the nutmeg plantations; then a slower last morning before the crossing back. That shape balances the history and the water without rushing either.
