Routing · via Jakarta or Bali

Australia to Banda Neira

Twelve to twenty-four hours depending on the connection, through Jakarta or Bali. Bali is closer; Jakarta has the flights. For this route, the flights win.

The hub we recommend

In short

Bali is the obvious hub from Australia and the wrong one for this trip: Jakarta has more onward Ambon departures, a wider choice of carriers and more flight times, which is what you actually need on a route with no backup.

  • Three to four legs total, and none of them is optional.
  • There is no direct Australia–Ambon service. Anything that claims one is wrong.
  • Travel insurance matters more here than on a normal trip.

The legs

Australia to Banda, in four steps

  1. 01

    Leg 1

    Australia → Jakarta

From the east coast, a long-haul leg. Jakarta is the preferred transit point because of the depth of onward Ambon connections, not because it is the closest.

  2. 02

    Leg 2

    Jakarta → Ambon (AMQ)

3h15–3h45 direct, several departures daily, mostly morning and midday. Take the earliest you can connect to.

  3. 03

    Overnight

    Ambon

Non-negotiable on this route. After a long-haul leg plus a domestic one, you will not be in a state to catch a 05:00 turboprop anyway.

  4. 04

    Leg 3

    Ambon → Banda

Charter flight 45–60 min, fast boat 5–6 h, or Pelni ferry 8–10 h, depending on the week.

Booking legs with minimal layovers shortens the trip on paper and removes every recovery option. On this route, slack is worth more than speed.

Planning notes

What Australian travellers get wrong

Routing through Bali by default

It is the familiar hub, and it has thinner onward connections to Ambon. Jakarta is less pleasant and more reliable.

Under-budgeting the transit

Twelve hours is the best case. Twenty-four is normal once layovers and the Ambon night are counted.

Skipping insurance

Weather delays on this route are routine rather than exceptional. Cover that includes trip disruption is worth having.

Fixed return dates

A Banda departure can be pushed to the next available day. Do not book a same-day international connection out of Jakarta.

All practical info & FAQ

Is there a direct flight to Ambon?

No. Every route goes through an Indonesian hub, and in practice that means Jakarta or Bali followed by a domestic flight to Ambon.

How long does it take?

Twelve to twenty-four hours to Ambon depending on connections, then the crossing to Banda the following morning. Plan two days of travel rather than one long one.

Why not route through Bali?

You can, but Jakarta carries more onward Ambon flights with more airlines and more departure times. On a route where one missed connection costs days, the bigger hub is worth the detour.

What else should I sort before flying?

Current travel advisories, entry requirements for your passport, and travel insurance that covers trip disruption. Then cash in rupiah, drawn in Ambon.
