Open Water
The Lava Flow shallow zone for the first dive of the trip, Ai's north reef, and Hatta's inner reef for buoyancy practice and macro.
Dive sites · depths, levels and seasons
Eight sites, from a sheltered lava flow that suits a first dive of the trip to outer pinnacles that hold hammerhead schools. Booked against your logged dives, not your wish list.
Banda diving splits cleanly in two: sheltered, largely current-free sites inside the group that an Open Water diver can handle, and outer pinnacles and walls with real current where local guides will turn back anyone without an advanced ticket.
The sites
Depth ranges and difficulty as local guides brief them. Current is the variable that matters most, and it changes with the tide as much as the season.
| Site | Depth | Marine life | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lava Flow, off Gunung Api | 5–30 m | Coral regrown over the 1988 flow, dense reef fish, calm current | Beginner / Open Water |
| Pulau Ai, north reef | 2–15 m | Shallow coral garden, easy entry, snorkellers in the same boat | Beginner / snorkel-friendly |
| Hatta Island, inner reef | 5–20 m | Seahorses, nudibranchs, clownfish — strong macro | Beginner to Open Water |
| Pulau Banda Besar | 5–33 m | Sea fans, barrel sponges, candy crabs, leaf fish | Open Water / Advanced |
| Karang Hatta, outer wall | 10–30 m | Drop-off toward the Banda Trench, oceanic manta, eagle ray, trevally | Advanced Open Water |
| Batu Kapal (Ship Rock) | 10–30 m | Pinnacle dive, seasonal hammerheads, giant trevally, napoleon wrasse | Advanced, strong current |
| Pulau Suanggi / Manuk | 10–30 m | Best odds in the Banda Sea for hammerhead schools; occasional tiger and thresher | Advanced, strong current |
| Pulau Run | 10–30 m | Eagle rays, tuna, schooling bumphead parrotfish, occasional hammerheads | Open Water+ / moderate current |
Guides hold back divers without an advanced certification when current runs at Suanggi or the outer walls. Book against your logbook.
Diving & liveaboard packagesBy certification
The Lava Flow shallow zone for the first dive of the trip, Ai's north reef, and Hatta's inner reef for buoyancy practice and macro.
Batu Kapal and the Karang Hatta wall for hammerheads and steep drop-offs; Suanggi for the strongest odds of a school.
The inner reefs. Seahorses, nudibranchs, candy crabs and leaf fish, in slow current where you can actually hold a frame.
Half-day boat dives from a homestay, a three to five-day dive-and-stay, or a liveaboard for Suanggi, Manuk and Run.
Nitrox is available on request, but confirm before arrival — stock on the island is genuinely limited.
For walls, pinnacles and pelagics, yes — the sites drop into deep water and visibility often runs past 25 m in the calm window. It is not a destination for easy shore diving; almost everything is a boat dive.
Yes, at the sheltered sites. The Lava Flow shallow zone, Ai's north reef and Hatta's inner reef are calm and largely current-free. The outer pinnacles are not beginner sites and guides will say so.
On the shallow reefs, macro — seahorses, nudibranchs, leaf fish. In the channels and off the walls, pelagics: hammerheads in season, oceanic manta, eagle ray, tuna and dense schools of trevally and bumphead parrotfish.
Oct–Apr for calm seas and the best visibility, with hammerhead schooling at Hatta and Ai running roughly the same window. Outside it the outer walls are quieter and often simply unreachable.
