In short
Banda snorkelling is unusually good because several of the best reefs are wall-style: the shelf drops away from around five metres, so from the surface you are looking down a coral face into open blue rather than across a flat.
- Sjahrir Island's house reef is shallow and calm — fine for beginners and families.
- Sonegat Channel has real current and is for confident swimmers with a boat drop.
- A boat is not always needed, but it is what reaches the good sites.
The spots
Five reefs worth the boat ride
Depth and visibility below are working ranges from local briefings, not measurements. Conditions shift with tide, rain and time of day.
Sjahrir Island house reef
A gentle shallow shelf close to shore, around 1–8 m with 10–20 m visibility. The place to start if anyone in the group is new to it.
Karang Hatta
A broad reef flat off Hatta, roughly 3–20 m with visibility commonly 15–25 m. Further out, and worth the crossing.
Pulau Ai drop-off
A wall edge falling from about 5 m past 30 m. You stay on the upper shelf while the view runs into deep blue.
Sonegat Channel
The passage between Neira and Gunung Api, 5–20 m, visibility 20 m+ on a good day. Stronger current — confident swimmers and a guided boat drop only.
Treat the figures as planning guidance rather than a guarantee. Ask the boat crew on the morning, not the week before.

Bring your own mask if you are fussy about fit. Rental stock on a small island is finite and the good sizes go first.
Is snorkelling here actually good?
Unusually good, because several sites are walls rather than flats. At Ai the reef edge drops from about five metres, so from the surface you are looking down a coral face — which is normally a diving view.
Do I need a boat?
Not for the Sjahrir house reef, which you can reach from shore. For Ai, Hatta and the lava flow, yes — and a guided drop is the sensible way to do Sonegat, which has real current.
When is the best season?
The calm window, Oct–Apr, when the sea is flatter and visibility holds up. The Jun–Aug monsoon brings wind and chop at exposed sites like Sonegat. Check the sea state a day or two ahead rather than months.
What will I see?
Hard and soft coral, reef fish in numbers, turtles regularly, and on the drop-offs the occasional larger animal cruising the edge. The reefs sit inside the Coral Triangle, which is why the fish life holds up even on an average day.
