Reef and wall
Coral gardens close to town, and the steep drop-offs off Ai that start within swimming distance of the beach.
Day by day · 5 days, 4 nights
The version most first-time visitors should take. Two days under water, a full day of history, the volcano, and enough slack that one bad sea day does not wreck the trip.
Five days is the first length that lets the history and the diving both have a full day of their own, instead of sharing one and shortchanging both.
Day by day
Built so the two water days sit either side of the volcano morning, which is the one fixed point in the week.
Day 1
Cross from Ambon, check in, and walk the waterfront in the late afternoon — the town reads differently once the heat drops.
Day 2
Fort Belgica in the morning with a guide, then across to a working nutmeg estate on Banda Besar after lunch.
Day 3
The reef walls and the lava flow below Gunung Api. Visibility can run to 30 m in season, and the sites are within a short boat ride of town.
Day 4
Pre-dawn summit, back down by mid-morning, and the rest of the day slow — which after a 640 m climb is not a suggestion.
Day 5
The museum, the market, and whatever the town is doing that morning, before the crossing back to Ambon.
Day 3 and Day 4 swap freely. If the forecast is better on the fourth morning, we move the boat day rather than push through a bad one.
The water days
Two days is enough to cover both the shallow reef and one proper wall.
Coral gardens close to town, and the steep drop-offs off Ai that start within swimming distance of the beach.
Fast-growing hard coral over the 1988 flow below Gunung Api — one of the few dives anywhere with a date on it.
18–28 m is typical in the calm window, and 30 m happens. Outside it, expect less and expect cancellations.
Dive excursions run roughly USD 50–100 including gear rental, quoted separately from the package.
Getting there
Indicative, and the reason a five-day trip is safer than a three-day one: none of the Banda crossings runs daily.
| Leg | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Flight to Ambon (AMQ) | USD 100–300 | From Jakarta, Makassar or Surabaya. Seasonal. |
| Ambon → Banda, Pelni ferry | from about USD 10–15 | 8–10 h, multi-week rotation |
| Ambon → Banda, fast boat | IDR 300,000–500,000 | 5–6 h, calm months only |
| Ambon → Banda, charter flight | IDR 500,000–900,000 | 45–60 min, few seats, few days a week |
Plan the island days around whichever crossing is running that week, not the reverse.
Full getting-there guideBecause three makes the history and the diving share a day. Five gives each a full one, adds Banda Besar and Ai, and leaves half a day spare — which is what absorbs a late crossing without costing you the volcano.
Hatta sometimes, Run rarely. Both are an hour or more of open boat each way and only dependable in the calm season. If they matter to you, take the seven-day version.
Yes. The same boat days work as snorkelling days, and the Ai wall drops off within swimming distance of the surface, so non-divers see a great deal of it.
Indicatively USD 320–460 per person at homestay tier and USD 430–640 at hotel tier, twin-share, excluding flights to Ambon. Diving is quoted on top.
